EXCERPT FROM: STANDARD OBSTRUCTION MARKINGS Second Edition March 1987 Transport Canada Aviation CHAPTER 9 MARKING OF MOORED BALLOONS AND KITES 9.1 APPLICATION OF MARKING All moored balloons 1.8 m (6 feet) in diameter or 3 cubic metres (115 cubic feet) of gas capacity, and all kites weighing more than 2.27 kg. (5 lbs) operated at higher than 90 m (300 feet) AGL shall require marking as detailed in this chapter. NOTE: Balloon and kite operations below 90 m (300 feet) AGL shall not require marking unless assessed a hazard to air navigation. 9.2 DAY MARKING Streamers or similar type markers shall be attached to mooring lines to warn airmen of their presence during daytime hours. (a) Display a Markers shall be displayed at not more than 15 m (50 feet) intervals beginning at 45 m (150 feet) above the surface of the earth and should be visible for at least 1.6 km (1 mile). (b) Shape - Markers shall be rectangular in shape, 150 mm (6 inches) wide and 3 m (10 feet) in length. (c) Colour Patterns - One of the following colour patterns shall be used: (i) Solid international orange (ii) International orange and white. Two triangular sections, one of orange and the other of white, combined to form a rectangle. 9.3 NIGHT MARKING (a) Balloon and kite operations below 150 m (500 feet) shall require red or white flashing lights of minimum 32.5 candelas output, on the moored balloon or kite and on the mooring lines, or floodlighting as per Chapter 4, para. 4.2.3. (b) Balloon or kite operations above 150 m (500 feet) shall require white flashing lights of 500 effective candelas on the moored balloon and on the mooring lines. Alternatively, steady burning white lights of equivalent intensity may be installed. (c) Display - Flashing red and white lights shall be displayed, as applicable, on the top, nose section, tail section, and on the tether cable approximately 5 m (15 feet) below the craft so as to define its shape and size. Additional lights shall be equally spaced along the cable's overall length for each 107 m (350 feet) or fraction thereof commencing 90m ( 300 feet) AGL. Amendment No.2 88-05-03 9.2 (d) Control - The light marking shall be controlled so that the on and off points of operation shall occur for Northern sky illuminance values between 300 and 600 lux.
