Subject: X-1 abuse

This past weekend we really tortured a Jordan Air X-1.This was on
the occasion of the 4th annual Sandbanks Provincial Park kitefly
near Kingston, Ontario.

You know how things go around the office, people making jokes
about "go fly a kite", we Ilene invited her boss (owner of the
company) to come out a give it a try. She never imagined that he'd
show up. Boy was she surprised when he and his wife pulled into the
park!

They had never before flown stunt kites, and were eager to try. When
I looked in our bag I found that we were equipped for my use, not
for a beginner. We had a Jabberwocky, a few kites of our own design,
and the X-1. The Jabberwocky was too fragile for the 10-12mph
winds, and I had no spare 2 wrap rods at home, our own kites are too
hard for an absolute beginner to fly, so we put up the X-1.

They drove it hard into the ground repeatedly, averaging about 15-20
seconds aloft each time. This went on for over an hour! The kite
did not flinch. Several other kite fliers later remarked that we
used an awefully good kite to teach people, and were surprised that
it survived. We were all truly impressed.

Dean: If it doesn't break, it's *TOO*HEAVY*

Has he no idea?

Aww come on Andrew, that's a special top secret nasa inspired frame of
unobtainium in that kite, we can't help it, we only no how to do things
one way.

And thank you Michael, you guys won't believe the new
kite(tracerultramasterpro)we'll have at the convention!!

I haven't put that much time on my X-1's yet only a few hours practice,
and some competition time. I prefer my Pro's a little more strongly.

I don't think that Dean puts a better frame in his kites than anyone
else. He frames his kites better! My first Pro has Beman PC14s in it
straight from Dean, and through 6 months of use and some serious abuse,
I've only broken two lower leading edges. There were many times that
I thought I would have nothing but graphite shreds for a frame, but
after inspection, the frame was in one piece. Through hard black holes
and numerous tip stabs, the kite has stood up to the abuse.

The kite and frame has taken what would have trashed many other kites!

Dean makes Un-f***ing-believable kites. You have to fly them to
believe it. These kites let you do what you want to do, without
thinking about how to do what you want to do.

Sam.

Ob Disclaimer: I am a sponsored flyer through Jordan Air and Beman
Archery, These opinions are mine.

So where do I get lighter fabric than 1/2 oz Icarex? Mylar has been tried
but I think that "rip-stop" mylar is heavier. I seem to remember that
the fabric used on the red Rev I at Fano was claimed to be a lighter
polyester than Icarex, anyone know what it was, or where to get it?

Orcon. And it is rip-stop. See me at Wildwood 2 weeks. Indoors.

Orcon is basically rip-stop mylar, and since mylar is a polyester
material, it qualifies as lighter polyester than Icarex. The rip stop
threads (usually polyester, although there are kevlar versions) are
bonded to the mylar.
