Take the whole family to the Second Annual Silver Wings Kite Festival, 10am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday at Northwest High School's activity fields. The Wichita Windjammers Kite club sponsors the two-day, dual-line stunt kite competition, where serious flyers will amaze viewers with compulsory figures, ballet, free style and team competition. "I tell people it's like watching the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds fly, only it's much, much slower," sid the coordinator, Mel Wohrley. Fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association is the main reason for the festival, Wohrley said. "The onthe one," he said, "is so we can have fun and show off a little. It's a relatively easy sport, and one of the few where men and women compete on an equal basis." Competition is divided by skill, with special events for youngsters. Wohrley has been flying stunt kites since his son's 11th birthday, three or four years ago. "He learned to fly them about two hours after I did," Wohrley said. "We put them together and took them to the aprk, and I flew them first. He kept coming up and sying, 'Dad, can I fly it now?' and I'd say, 'Sure! Watch this!" If you'd like to compete, you can sign up between 9 and 10am either day and pay $15 for the first event, $5 for each additional event. Call XXX-XXXX for details. Watching is free. You can also bring your own kite to fly, also free. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
