When they were introduced I ran to the store at Newport Beach only to be stopped by extreme sticker shock. When the Rev II came out I thought it was a good alternative, but I wanted a larger kite for lighter winds. The Backtracker was below the sticker shock level but the quality is just not there and the size is like the RevII. So the Rev 1.5 looked like the Rev for me. So this time I ran to the store at Bodega (we moved). OUCH! It's price is the SAME as the Rev I!! Come on, $250 for a kite?! I can buy TWO 2 string stunters for that much! There's got to be a better price out there! Are it's materials and construction costs really that high or are these guys soaking their patent rights? How long before the patent expires? Are there better prices out there in catalog land? = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Wed, 19 Jul 1995 10:09:04 -1000 From: jburka@Glue.umd.edu (Jeffrey C. You don't need a larger kite for lighter winds; you just need lighter sticks. For approximately $25 you can build a UL frame for a Rev II out of SkyShark IIIp's. Don't listen to anybody who tries to tell you you need the extra surface area. My favorite *indoor* kite is an SUL Rev II. >So the Rev 1.5 looked like the Rev for me. I've seen the Rev 1.5 going for $130-$150 without handles/lines. Figure another $30 for the stainless steel handles and make your own line set for $20-$30 and you should still be able to put together a full, flyable package for under $200. >I can buy TWO 2 string stunters for that much! As may be, but you can also buy dual line kites for a lot more. You mostly get what you pay for. If that's not good enough, learn to sew! That's what I did. ;-) Jeff -- |Jeffrey C. Over here in Ireland the best price I have found is 195 POUNDS (which is over US$300) for the full kit. I ended up buying a Backtracker (for the equivalent of US$130) and find it a joy to fly, as well as being a good training for flying my much richer friend's Rev (you can crash it a whole lot more before anything breaks). Again, getting lightweight spars is not so cheap here - A set for my friend's REV was nearly US$200. As for building one ... if you can afford the materials and Rev do not sue you, go ahead - I built a four line kite in 1975 and using bamboo and polythene sheet - It is not quite as good as at the edge of the wind, but flew well enough, despite the fact that the Lawyers at Revolution would probably say it retrospectively?) infringed their patent. If only I had been a greedy soul and put in my design first! Still, I always believed that concepts, like the wind, should be free, and that we should all make use of them. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
