Subject: Kites !!! A hobby ???

Some people may think that it is not a worth while hobby, but it is a
heck of a job.
I can actually say that I fly kites for a living, I happen to build them
too, but at least I get to fly them.
Beats jobs like
-press keys on keyboard
-mid-level management suck up (effective mid lev. mgrs excepted)

Besides, who can knock a hobby that involves days at the beach, in the
sun (unless your in the Pac. North West), and it is enviornmentally
sound. You do not need to kill, destroy or burn anything to fly a kite.

oh well.

In case all rec.kiters did not make the connection, Carl is
the Carl "Cross Deck" Crowell. There was a thread on Cross Deck
a few weeks ago. (see. Kite Lines Summer-Fall 1993).

Wellcome to rec.kites, Carl!

Nice to hear from you Carl! Your Cross Deck design is one of the
finest designs we've seen published in a long while. Many thanks.

  Other than the petrochemicals.
Hmm... maybe back to natural silk or paper & bamboo or spruce ...
Not from old growth forests of course.

I do have to admit that I once hit a bird with my lines. I don't
think it killed it, but it was really dazed for a while. :>

(Yes, I am serious; no, I didn't do it on purpose)

I winged a couple of birds way back when, but not enough to make them do
more than squawk in protest. Much more amusing to me, though, was the
first time Chuck Connor tried out a Flexifoil--one of my six footers, at
SunFest '91. Somehow he managed to knock the bird out of the sky! I think
he smacked it's wing with a line hard enough to flip it over and lose any
sense of aerodynamicism. Fortunately, a moment after it thumped onto the
beach, it got up and flew off again. I wonder if the bird would have been
so lucky if we'd been flying on Kevlar.

I was flying a small white fighter kite with a red hand in the middle
down on the public pier on the Seattle waterfront.

It seemed to facinate all the immature gulls nearby who kept buzzing it
trying to get free eats.

Seems that the red spot on the bill of a white mature gull means it'll
feed ya if you pester it enough.

I didn't injure any of them. It was rather fun flying about between
them. Just watch out when they jettison excess ballast when manouvering
sharply.
