    Folks,

it's with considerable regret that I depart this conference. Since I
no longer have access to an Internet gateway through which I can use a
News reader, I'm forced to use the mail gateway maintained by Marty.
Problem is, this conference is SO active that the Kites mail is getting
in the way of the real mail. Tough decision, but work/real income has
    to come first 8-{

I've really enjoyed this conference. It's full of life and some real
characters - good, bad, and ugly - and I think that such a mix is
necessary. I hope it keeps going and keeps improving. Maybe one day
I'll find a way to get back to the conference. I hope so.

Private mail to me will always be welcome -
    Allan.Savage@meo.mts.dec.com

    Sunny Skies and Steady Winds,
    BigAl

Al,

I also get my rec.kites via Marty's email feed. Your right, it can be
a bit much at times (i.e. all the time). My solution (and many others
use simular techniques) is a program call Personal Postmaster (unix and
perhaps sun specific software). Personal Postmaster examines incommming
mail, looks for specific things I have indicated (such as "From kites-request@das.harvard.edu") and moves the mail to a file folder (different mail, different
folders). So, anything for rec.kites automatically goes to the rec.kites folder
and, as such, is not in my regular email in-basket. This is the ONLY WAY I'm
able to handle rec.kites.

Even if you can't get a hold of a copy of PP, it shouldn't be too hard to
write (or have someone write) a simple email parser.

Just a thought,

Darrin

I use a program called procmail. It sounds similar to Personal
Postmaster. It allows me to process my incoming e-mail in a wide variety
of different ways. It is very powerful yet fairly easy to start using
the basics (such as sorting email). I would recommend it to anyone who
as need of such a program.

No need to write one yourself. There are some such tings available on
the net.

E.g. scan the archives for "mailagent". Excerpt from the Readme follows:
------------------------------ snip -------------------------------
This is a mailagent program, and it will take care of all your incoming
mail by applying a set of rules and trying to figure out what to do with
it. A message can be saved in a folder, left in the main mailbox, posted
to a newsgroup, forwarded to other people, split if it is a digest,
etc... You may even delete all those mails you do not wish to see, ever.

2 suggestions to add to the others:

If your mail is handled by MMDF, read the manual page for "maildelivery" this
tells you how to do neat stuff like store kite stuff in a separate mailbox,
automatically reply to anything from your mother, throw away anything from
Mr Nasty, etc...

If you don't have access to these sorts of neat tools, consider creating a new
account just for your kite mail and subscribing only that account.

You owe the Kite Oracle a dog called Biff and a black and white cat.
