(1-800-827-6364) Subject: Silent Auction R-KET It is amazing how much controversy this auction has created and yours truly has to take a bit of the blame. So what is the point here? There are a bunch of dealers, manufacturers and private individuals who would love to sell, unload, promote their wares on the net. If we open it up for this kind of activity, you can see hundreds of kites for sale or auction overnight. And judging from individuals who liked this ideal and/or participated, there is a place for auctions and / or sale of kites on the net. rec.kites has historically frowned upon advertising and individuals have crossed that rather fine line with very creative methods, be it a kite review, auction, or whatever means. Advertising is advertising no matter how hard you try to disguise it. Some people enjoy those postings and while others have cried foul. Dan should receive credit for coming up with a unique way to sell kites and there are people who respond positively to it. At the same time criticism is appropriate where false or misleading claims are made. So rather than make this incident a public shouting match among dealers and manufacturers, why not take this incident and do something constructive about it. Would people be interested in moving this sort of activity to rec.kites.marketplace? (or some similar forum). There would be no restrictions on what is advertised and sold. You can make whatever outrageous claims you want about a kite, real or imaginary. The only restriction is buyer beware. The downside is that a new newsgroup or whatever will not have the huge audience of rec.kites(buyers) and you might see the same thing posted on both newsgroups - thereby defeating the whole intent. The for sale newsgroups does work for other products and it may work for kites. Or should we accept this type of activity on rec.kites and make it an open market place for anyone wishing to sell a kite? By the way, I would like to have some FUN by auctioning* off some of these R-KET kites... The proceeds will go to Make Money Fast and the winner of the auction will also get a free Box of Tricks Kite.** Hoy ...just as guilty as everyone else but I am having FUN BFK **If you really think I am serious about this, PLEASE email me directly and keep it off the net. * Sorry Dan, I couldnt resist stealing a great idea and I got a ton of these R-KETS that I want to unload at really low prices so we as dealers can keep kiting affordable for everyone and make the sport grow. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 19 Dec 1995 13:12:19 -1000 From: kevin@island.kites.com (Kevin Mayeshiro) Message-Id: <4b7gsj$lvc@malasada.lava.net> Organization: Island Kites Subject: Re: Silent Auction R-KET Bfk (bfk@aol.com) wrote: : So rather than make this incident a public shouting match among dealers : and manufacturers, why not take this incident and do something : constructive about it. After talking about the best kite consequently there comes the question for the best place to buy it. It always worked that way, but times are changing and people get used to the internet... >So rather than make this incident a public shouting match among dealers >and manufacturers, why not take this incident and do something >constructive about it. Not only for the retailers, but also for us customers. But wait, Andrew just told us that it's useless to discuss a rec.kites-subgroup here until he has made the necessary steps... >The downside is that a new newsgroup will not have the huge audience >of rec.kites(buyers) Only the ones looking for good deals. Why not? Kiteflyers are also humans... :-) >I am having FUN That's the point, isn't it?
