Sunday afternoon is not the BEST time to beat the record; most of us from the San Diego Kite Club had plans to leave sunday, and those few that were left, had to contend with the rain. Johnny had made plans with Gophal Das to do some "cutting" with their fighter kites Sunday morning before we left, but the rain even cancelled that. I meant to post a report about the WSIKF sooner, but we've had a terible week since we came back. [We moved to an apartment right before our vacation, so that earthquake repairs could begin inside the house, then on our 1st day back to work after vacation, our apartment was broken into, the cameras were taken along with a few other things. Thank God! I had already taken all the used film out of the camera bag to be developed, or all of our photos of WSIKF would be gone too.] Anyway back to the report of the kite festival. I wanted to post a few things that were not mentioned in the other reports: Scot Hampton (Utah) was there with his new drawings. He had included kites shown at WSIFK from the past two years. Kites made by the San Diego kite club members were there in full force: Dorine Imbach's King Tut, and Peacock; Gail Lindsay's two roc's, the Kingfisher and Butterflies; Randy Tom's exoctic Warrior; Jose Sainz's Calle (sp) and his fighter; and Johnny's Falcon fighter. There were so many others as well, it would be too much to list. A big seller this year at the festival booths and kite stores in town were the mini-kites. Deb Cooley had sold out all of the small kites made by Scot Hampton by Saturday. As Carl mentioned, Milton York restaurant was as *SLOW* as ever. The best bargin for a salmon dinner has to be the Illwaco Booster's tent. The quality has been the same all four years we have attended. Now, the sad news... YES, Johnny and Tom Joe were both eliminated in the first round of the fighter kite competition saturday morning. Johnny was quite nervous and basically droped his kite two times. I was disappointed because I knew he could have done better. The rest of the fights were interesting, yet my heart wasn't into it. One big distraction for the competitors was that the fighter competition started at 9:30 am. Then when the skydivers were ready to dive, the competition had to be stopped, everyone move out of the field, and wait. About 10 minutes later, the fighting could resume. Terrible planning!!! Plus the cody fly was taking place in the next field so we couldn't watch both. I have a few more complaints/suggestions, but I'll save them for another time. Saturday afternoon, everyone who stayed down at the beach missed the Private/Invitational Fighter Kite Comp. hosted by Ed Alden (WA). He had gone out and purchased trophies, and Gophal had brought red t-shirts for all the invited fighters. There were 6 fighters, and they had a round-robin contest at the ballfield in town. The one with the most points at the end would be the winner. There were a lot of GOOD fights, and they actually ended up setting a three minute time limit, or we would have still been there. Johnny was extremely loose and calm by then and he pulled through to win first place. Matthew Alden and Gophal tied for second and they had a tie-breaker, unfortunately I can't remember who got 2nd at this moment. Sorry. I had a wonderful time meeting all the rec.kiters that I ran into, not to mention all the friends we've made in the past years. Thanks Steve M. for the @ buttons. Thanks to Dale and Calvin Vanderhoof for the coffee break in Weed on our way up to Long Beach. Thanks to Carl and Katharine Crowell for the rest stop in Portland on our way home. ========================================================================= Gina Hsiung | "There are things known and there are things hfoao033@huey.csun.edu | unknown, and in between are the Doors." -- Jim Morrison -- = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
