Carolyn and Chris are planning, (after a few weeks rest) the 5th annual Prairie Winds Kite Fest. The Bay Area Sundowners, Chicago Fire and Sky Scapers were there representing teams and pairs. The event also attracted curiously enough David Brittan, Ted Dougherty, (Skynasaur); Keith Anderson, (TOTL); and Steve Thomas, (Buena Vista Kite Company). With this many top notch kiters at the event RAIN on Saturday did not help enhance what looked as if it was going to turn out to be a BAD event. Saturday morning the rain fell without regard to the fact that we had scheduled a kite event in Shawnee Mission Park. Rain gear was very fashionable and mud was quickly accumulating on our soles. A group of contestants including Eric Wolff and a few of the Bay Area Sundowners, David Bui and a few others met under the Wind Wizards tent to discuss what we could do under such unpleasant conditions. The rain kept falling. MC Productions (the best PA systems in the mid west) were not moving any equipment out on the wet field. The event looked like it was a loss. Most of the competitors stayed away from the field and stayed in their cars. Chris Moore decided to move the event indoors. Wind Wizards had rented the indoor Sports Complex which had 32ft ceilings and an indoor field. It delayed things and the rain kept falling. MC Productions quickly changed their gear and started moving the PA system inside. Everybody moved their gear indoors. The indoor field looked like a miniture kite field. Contestants were setting up their gear around the primiter of the field and several people had alread put up a few kites. It was an indoor kite festival. Chicken Lips the clown was making balloon kite for the kids and even made me a balloon dual line kite. Getting everything rearranged took a few hours but during that time Steve Thomas gave an indoor kite flying seminar with a new kite he brought (and not enough of). It was pretty exciting to watch all this coming together. Keith Anderson started getting a group of judges for an indoor ballet competition. Within a few hours we were ready to start an indoor competition with about 12 contestants. The indoor competition was great. There were some impressive performances but out of the best David Bui took 1st place. The AKA need look no further, the Best is David. Hands down. After the Ballet competition we all took off about 5:00pm to Zarba's Bar-B-Que. This was a nice long dinner. At about 7:30pm we were ready to get started again. We prepared for an indoor mystery ballet. We had 20 contestants. The three most impressive performances were by David Brittan, Steve Thomas and a first time competitor a local veteranian, whos name I cannot remember. But his performance was, for a first time competitor...GREAT!!! The winner this year went to the Indoor Best David Brittan. Later that night a whole bunch headed to WestPort in Kansas City for some night life. Sunday meant we had to complete everything in one day. Sunday morning was cold and rain was threatening all around us. MC Productions quickly set up at 7:30am and was ready to go. Jon Trennapole got the judging panels ready Steve Michael (Scorekeeper) ran the random flight order and we were set to go. Everyone was on que. Like no other, this went off like a fine tuned production. Contestants ready at the stage in area, judges and field directors were ready to take the field. We even had time to run a few childrens events and give away tickets to the Alabama concert. (local radio station D.J. Danny Montana provided tickets to the concert along with a few other prizes). Everything went quickly and faster than most would have liked but noone complained. It moved. Thanks to everyone who made this happen. The only event we did not run was quad ballet. The event was fun and a challenge for me and for everyone else. I can't wait for next year. This event was no loss. Keith Anderson and I met a marketing specialist >From a resort development in Jakarta, Indonesia who asked me (MR.NASTY) to produce a kite festival. We are now working with a marketing company in St.Louis and are looking to send out budget requests to potential invitees. We are putting together a budget which includes round trip air fare and hotel (Resort) accomidations. I got to see one of the resorts. It's located right on the beach and the water was crystal clear. I'm so excited I got to go pee. -- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>|||||||||||||||||||||||||<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< You might be a Red Neck if: You think that a Buglite and a six-pack make an evening of quality entertainment. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>|||||||||||||||||||||||||<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Fri, 5 May 1995 19:16:51 -1000 From: mg61638@ltec.net (Egald) Message-Id: <3of0o4$90a@iac2.ltec.net> Organization: Lincoln Telephone Navix Service Subject: Re: Prairie Winds Kite Fest (Article) Frank, First Kite Festival I have been to with competition.
