They are thickest at the middle and taper away towards the ends, so they don't compress the metacarpus at all. I got mine through Into the Wind for about $20. The best (only?) solution has to be Peter Lynns quick release handles. They have a harness strap that goes round your back to take most of the strain, but will drop the lines out of them if you let go. Sadly they are expensive (50UKP new) but I manged to get a second hand pair for half that. b.t.w. Please dont set distribution to usa otherwise us lot in the uk dont see it. (Umm how come I am reading this when the distribution is usa ? I give up!) Some random thoughts... I find Sky claws fine for reasonable periods of time with kites of any size. You'll get stronger with practice. If they hurt too much you're pulling too hard. Good grips look great but have a non-padded bar. I couldn't buy them in the UK and imported them specially but I hardly use them. By far the best is the Lynn Dead man handles - You can fly all day with them, but they'll cost you about 500f the price of your 8' flexi. With these, you can relax your hand grip but you can't let go. This seems to lead back to what you've got... oh well. They were probably the most comfortable grips I've held, at least for power kiting. For a single 8' flexi, I can't see much use to them. For non-power flying, my all time favorites are the Moran handles, which somebody else has already mentioned. These are foam-covered, tapered handles which are very comfortable and very usable. I agree mainly, but I think that when you fly for a longer period of time, the strings on which the line is attached can rub your fingers pretty bad.... We use this handel made bye Big wind KIte's it has both types of handdels on it ie the strap and the handle so if your hands get sore you can switch from one to the other.
