Central Parks Sheep Meadow & Great Lawn are ok for single line kites but the ground winds tend to swirl around a lot making in near very difficult for stunters. Another option is Liberty state park just over the Hudson river in NJ. You can get there with or without a car. Its a good place to fly year round, with a great view of NYC. to get there; Car;Holland Tunnel to NJ turnpike exit 14B. Or; Path train from downtown to Jersey City, than take bus to park. Or; On weekends, take the ferry from the World Financial Center to Liberty Science Center (at Liberty State Park) Good Luck David (Krash) Klein +--+ l l +--+ l l l l l l l l l l /l Big City Kite Co1210 LexingtonAve. l l l l l l / l New York, NY 10028 l l l l l l / l Phone-212-472-2623 Fax-212-472-2998 l l l l l l l l AKA member merchant l l l l l l l l << Bite the big apple... l l__l l__l l__l l don't bite the maggots. I've found Manhattan to be the worst place to fly. The only places I've had any success have been: 1. The park (forgotten the name) where Shea stadium is. Granted this is in Queens, but it'll be pretty empty around this time of year. Don't hang about after dark, though. This place is easily accessible by subway. 2. 73rd Street and Riverside park (West side). There is a small running track right next to the river, so if the wind is coming from the SW you'll have fun on short lines (75'-100') Good luck. Please let me know if you ever find anything better! Good spots to fly in Manhattan, the heliport on top of the Pan Am building (no, they don't allow it). Battery Park gets ripping winds. Central Park has the Sheep's Meadow. But you would do better leaving Manhattan and going to Liberty Park in New Jersey (over looking Lady Liberty) or the park by the Verizano Bridge along the Belt Parkway. Or drive 30 or 45 minutes longer and go to Jones Beach, best flying in the area. Disclaimer: I fly at Jones Beach and I am prejudiced. And it's worth the drive too. In other words... there's really no place to fly in Manhattan. The other place i recommend is Flushing Meadow and it's a specific area of Flushing Meadow too. Dir: LIE east bound... Van Wyck towards Flushing Meadow Park. Bear right for exit... ther first field you see when you enter the park is where the winds are ok from any direction. I am a Manhattan resident with no car, so it is hard for me to find easily accessible places for kite fyling, but I do know of one intensely great spot. Just across the river, in Jersey City, N.J., there is a state park called Liberty Park. There are several large open places that are often completely empty, and perfect for kite flying ... open sky, and views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Easy to get to with a car - without a car, take the Path train to Grove Street, and there are lots of cabs parked around waiting for fares. The ride is not far. But getting a taxi back might be another matter... you might have to call a cab company from a pay phone. Another good place is Ft. Tryon Park, around W. 200th Street, on the extreme northern end of the island. This park has some open ares near the Hudson river, again with excellent views, of the George Washington Bridge, and the Pallisaides, across the river. The #4 bus or A train can get you there, but the bus is recommended because the subway leaves you with a walk through a deserted section of the park... I have also gone to Sheep Meadow in Central Park, and Park Slope in Brooklyn. The range is not as open, but it is still a good place to get it up! I also wonder, has anyone tried flying a kite from a roof top? I know that my kite is very easy to control, and rarely sky dives, so I sometimes think about trying it from the roof of my building. I may be completely stupid about this though - Are there power generators, etc. that I should be considering? I usually go to Coney island beach or any where along there (D,Q,F,) trains. Sometimes down to Rese park but they have some endangered birds there and sometimes your not supposed too. I know of a few good places in around Manhattan for kite flying, and thought I would share them. I, too, would appreciate hearing from anyone with additional suggestions. Good places in and around Manhattan: Liberty State Park, Jersey City, N.J. - It's just across the Hudson from downtown Manhattan. You can get there by path train (from the WTC to Grove Street), but would have to take a taxi the rest of the way to the park. If you can drive there it's much better. The park is wide open, with big vacant spaces, and incredible views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. You might actually meet other kite flyers there. Ft. Tryon Park, Manhattan. Take the A train to 190th or 200th St. station, or the #4 bus. It has some good locations, not too populated, with good views of the George Washington Bridge and the Pallisaides, a state park across the river, in N.J. Park Slope, Brooklyn. Take the D or Q train to the Prospect Park stop. Central Park. On weekdays, you can go to Sheep Meadow or the Great Lawn and get enough room to fly (especially if your kite tends to take off on its own, which I suppose it should!). I have also considered flying my kite from the roof of my apartment building in Midtown Manhattan, but wonder if I wouldn't be making a mistake. I don't want to crash into a building! I think there might also be some good flying areas at the park in the Bronx, adjacent to the Bronx Zoo, but can't say so first hand. Maybe someone else has been there? = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 16 Mar 1995 13:21:29 -1000 From: mingq@aol.com (MingQ) Message-Id: <3kah5p$c61@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc. As for Liberty State Park, another alternative to get there is by ferry on weekends only. You can catch it from World Financial Center, right in front of the Winter Garden. It's $5.00 round trip and runs from about 10am to 6:45pm. Billy Ng, is this the Billy competing in the Eastern League?
