But all they talk about are the new kites, new designs, and new products. They don't talk about the KTA itself. The trade show is only part of the convention. The other part involves the Association's effort to expand the industry and the visibility of kiting in general. I'd be interested to hear what people think about that. Sure, the new kites are more interesting to most of us. But if we actually hope to keep seeing new designs, to move kiting into the mainstream, to recruit bigger sponsor for our events, or to impress a woman on the beach with the news that we fly kites rather than play volleyball, well then, the work of the KTA *outside* the trade show is pretty important. My understanding is that KTA membership is down about 9this year. Any reactions why? Did any of you attend the annual business meeting? What did you think? And most important, whether you are a member or not, what do you think the Trade Association should be doing that they aren't doing now?? Tough questions, I know. One of my own suggestions was that KTA go to a vote by mail system so that ALL members, rather than just those who attend the show have a chance to vote for Board members. I'm sure this will spark a really boring discussion, so I'll apologize in advance. But this stuff is central to what we do. After all, how many of you have mothers that brag to the neighbors that you are serious kite fliers... -- David Gomberg phone 503-996-3083 Box 113, Neotsu OR 97368 USA fax 503-334-9692 Never try to teach pigs to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 31 Oct 1995 13:56:57 -1000 From: lbush14668@aol.com (LBush14668) Message-Id: <476d49$k5c@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc. This would seem like an excellent idea which would allow the manufacturers a day to let the kite retailers and public try out their products. It would be interesting if a dialog could develop about this in rec.kites. Think about it! Larry, there are scheduled demo times for the retailers/wholesalers to try the kites: the first one will be on January 9 from 3-5pm (at the first demo time usually harly any US-retailer shows up but only the non-US members of KTA International ..) the second one will be on January 13 from 2-5pm.(which normally has many more attendees) Hope this information helps. The regular 'no we can't meet anyplace else the 3rd Saturday of the month' flying spot south of the Hilton? (at Mission Bay) Thanks. If the demo times are just for the retailers and manufacturers, I feel that the KTA is missing an opportunity for to promote the sport of kiting. A "public" fly that is coordinated with the San Diego Kite Club would not only be fun, but would also create more interest in kiting and help the sport to grow! Think about it!
