First, I have problems with Spectra slipping out of knots. I put on the casing, then tie an overhand knot in the end with both the Spectra and the casing, then tie the knot onto my swivel connector. I must not be doing it right, not using the right kinds of knots, or something, because fairly frequently the Spectra will slip out of the knot throught the casing when I am flying. How can I stop this? Secondly, I have the darndest time getting and keeping my lines the same length. Is there a trick to this? My braided hand straps and my sky-claw style handles don't seem to have any way to adjust the length, so I end up untying and re-tying my lines alot. There must be a better way! I REALLY appreciate any advice as this is driving me nuts! How can I stop this? What kind of knot are using to tie on the swivel? Most folks form a loop by tieing two overhand knots right next to each other. I tie a surgeon's loop, which is just an overhand knot with an extra turn. Both knots will hold without slipping. Once the loop has been made you can use a lark's head, or (better yet) an offshore swivel knot. Again, my source for knots is "Practical Fishing Knots II" by Lefty Kreh and Mark Sosin. >Secondly, I have the darndest time getting and keeping my lines the same length. >Is there a trick to this? All line stretches a little bit once the line braid tightens up. You should expect some differential stretching in the beginning. After a few hours of flying time, there should be no further unequal stretching. Once you have the knots figured out, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with your lines becomming unequal. If one line breaks, replace both lines, otherwise the unequal stress will drive you nuts. One way to deal with unequal new lines is to make long loops and tie the loops to your handles or straps using an easily tied knot. My handles have a loop harness, so I use a sheet-bend to tie the line to the handles. After the lines have finally set, I untie whichever loop I need to to get things even again. -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1993 00:38:57 -1000 From: ces1at@surrey.ac.uk (Andy Tate) Message-Id: Organization: University of Surrey, Dept Chem & Proc Eng,UK Subject: Re: Knot trouble and Line Length (Connie Baker) writes:>Date: Fri, 9 Jul 1993 14:11:30 CDT I have two problems I'd like some advice on. Havent had any problems so why KNOT give it a try. As for keeping lines same length I've not good answers. The scale of the problem does seem to depend on the spectra I use.
