(1-800-827-6364) Subject: Knot Again!? :-) Sorry folks but you must endure one more posting on sleeving and Knots. As you know, I am a firm believer that sleeving Spectra is a waste of time and "KNOT" needed. But some of you are afraid unspeakable things will happen if you fly sleeveless.(I'm not afraid of kite oracle) ;-) But, while browsing in the book store, I came across many books on knots.I found that there are two knots that claim no reduction of line strength!!! NONE!!! The first is the Bimini knot used by fisherman. 100 percent of the line strength is preserved. The second is the Blood Knot. This is used to tie line together and claims 95-100 percent line strength. Other "new" knots discussed claimed 80-95 percent line strength! WOW! I'm in heaven!!! Be a rebel! Fly sleeveless!!! The second is the Blood Knot. This is used to tie line together ...and claims 95-100. John, First - Great to see you stirring with a big stick. Keep it up. Second - I have been using the two knots for years for a variety of purposes, and more recently (last 4-years) for "kite knots." Great stuff, eh? With regard to knots, one point that has been consistently overlooked with regard to knots weakening the line they are tied in is that related to the same theory attached to little-old-lady-schoolteachers ripping 2" thick phone books in half. If you fan the pages, you are staggering the pages in such a way that one or two pages are being ripped at a time. The knot gives the same effect to the threads and strings that make up a rope. With the advent of chemical fiber line, as opposed to natural fiber, the added stretch of the individual fibers allows for much of the "fanning" of the individual threads and strings, resulting is less breakage. However, I can understand some claims that the less-stretchy Spectra and a few others seem to break more than Nylon, which is very elastic. Who knows for sure? I sure don't. With the tiny diameter of knots compared to the filament or thread size, I am doubtful that the knot has much effect on the "fan effect." Food for thought... Hey, the big pink monster is dragging my bum all over Southern Idaho these days. I love it. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Fri, 2 Dec 1994 16:00:20 -1000 From: jtavo@aol.com (JTavo) Message-Id: <3bojfk$l3f@newsbf01.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc.
