HSS Subject: kits and patterns and parts I'd like to move from buying kites to building them. I'm not very good with a sewing machine, but my sister has offered to help because she's interested in learning to work with ripstop in tight tolerances. My goal is to learn enough that I'm able to turn my own design ideas into flying reality. I suppose I should start with a kit (all materials included), then progress to a pattern for which I'd get the materials separately, then eventually modify existing patterns so much that I'm really making my own designs. What's a good way to get started? I've seen some kite materials in mail-order catalogs, but no kits or patterns, so I guess the materials were intended for repairing broken kites. Or am I looking in the wrong catalogs? Get the Hang 'em high catalogue. Tom Marvin (who is also on rec.kites) has got everything in there that you can think of, even three or four complete kits. And he delivers very fast. Goodwinds Kites, in Seattle, has a catalog of parts, and offers patterns as well. I'm not sure about full kits, but probably they can help you. The address is 3333 Wallingford North, Seattle, WA 98103. The phone is (206) 632-6151 and fax is (206) 633-0301. I would also recommend attending one of the many kite workshops around the country. I especially recommend the Fort Worden Kitemakers Conference, in Port Townsend, WA, the first weekend in March.Classes for all levels of skill/interest. most with kits. Sewing and non-sewing. For more info, write Bob Alford at 320 NE 4th St, North Bend, WA 98045. Other Conferences include Oregon in january, Junction, Texas in May, and there's also one in Maryland, but I don't know the dates. They have a few that they market. Next, obtain a book about building kites. The _KiteLines_ bookstore has many as do several other catalogs. Goodwinds Kites, AKA Kathy Goodwind, Gasworks Park Kite Shop, Seattle WA. is producing several patterns for both single and dual line kites. The ones that I've seen are very good: complete, full sized patterns, good instructions, etc. Kathy won a KTA award last year for best new product with these patterns, I think. They don't include materials, but I think the idea is to obtain the materials in whatever colors you wish at your favorite local shop or mail order supplier. Any shop should be able to order the patterns for you, as Goodwinds kites is also a wholesaler. There are lots of books available with good pattern/plans. Are you interrested more in single line or sport kites? Post back, and you'll get lots of recommendations here. -- Mike Eason or Media Specialist, Everett Community College, Everett, Washington, USA Pres, SCI-FI (Snohomish County Incredible Flying Individuals Kite Club) Organizers of: Jetty Island Kite Festival, 7/96 Washington State Sport Kite Championship, Casey Conf.
