The Thai language uses sanskrit for their writing but the English phonetic
spelling for kite is "wow", and the word is spoken with a "falling" tone.

According to my collection of on-line translating dictionaries,
we have:
chinese pianzi; liumang; fengzheng; shangsheng
danish drage
dutch vlieger
english kite
finnish leija; haarahaukka; kiskuri, huijari
french cerf-volant
german Drachen
italian aquilone
japanese karategata, tako, tobi
norwegian drage, rytterveksel, proformaveksel
spanish cometa
swedish drake
Possibly some of these refer to the bird that gives
kites their English name, and some of them may have
to do with financial misdealings (kiting checks).

hi,
Kite in spanish is "la cometa" ...the article "la", meaning "the" in english
differenciates it from "el cometa" ....meaning "the comet" in english.
Kite in the dravidian language "Tamil" is "Kaathadi", literally meaning "dance in the
wind". Tamil is spoken in the indian state of "Tamil Nadu" and in Srilanka, Malaysia and
Singapore.

In ASL (American Sign Language) "kite" is:
If you are right handed, take your left hand index finger and
point (touching) to the center of your right wrist just below your right
palm, with your palm flat (fingers might be extended to indicate a bigger
kite). Your right thumb would normally be about 4-6" away from your right
cheek, initially. At the same time wiggle your right hand (slight
rotating wiggle, not a big wave... unless your kite always flies that way
:-) ) while raising it higher about 6-10".
Like long line launching a kite! It's all visual and can be modified with
other subtlties of motion to be more descriptive of a particular kite.
You could even use two fingers at the wrist two indicate a sport kite.
Four fingers for Quads get a little cumbersome and may not be recognized
by someone signing ASL without some descriptive conversation first. Roger
Maddy (flies three or more quads at the same time) would really have
problems! :-}

Here is the approximate Russian name, seeing as we don't
have russian characters on our keyboards, it is not exact.
Letuchij zmeij (a direct translation into English is Flying snake)
That was from a russian friend. I'll consult greek friend for
the greek word at the German Championships soon.
