(1-800-827-6364) Subject: Kite Retailers/Direct Mailers To Kite Retailers/Direct Mailers By day, I'm in the direct mail business and there is legislation proposed, once again to fund SSI with income (in the form of a tax) on mail. It will be a 22 423936ncrease on top of the increase going in 1/95. What follows is a form letter to a generic congressman. If interested, or if you feel that the increased postage would adversely affect your business/income, please feel free to copy it, alter it and mail it to you congressperson. Smooth Winds and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year Alice Hayden -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ December 29, 1994 The Honorable U.S. Congress Dear Congressman: RE: Don't Support Job Losses In Your District The 1994 election sent a message to government that a change was needed. However, I am very concerned with the Contract for America requirement that the U.S. Postal Services prefund $11.6 billion to prefund a 5 year obligation as it would threaten my business's ability to remain solvent. The passage of this legislation in its current form would have a severe detrimental impact on my company's costs and sales and, as such, could affect my employment and business opportunities. This would, of course, also have a negative affect on the employment situation within the entire direct marketing industry. It would not only potentially cost me my business (and no doubtedly my vote as my family is a constituent in your district), but it defeats your purposes. 1. Jobs will be lost akin to the infamous boat buyer's tax of 1992. The new 22postal increases can't be passed along to our customers. 2. Increasing postal rates raises the CPI. Any COLAs in social security, veterans/civil service pensions, etc. will be impacted accordingly. Indexed rates will lose income taxes. The deficit financing costs will go up with the CPI and bonds will go down. 3. Constituents with adjustable rate mortgages will be adversely affected by a dramatic increase in the CPI. 4. The USPS will cease its current efforts to modernize and the extensive rate reclassification planned for 1995 will be shelved. Your consideration of the above would be greatly appreciated. As proposed, this will hurt the constituents in your district generally and both myself and my family personally. Please respond as soon as convenient.
