I'm really new to this news group so I think I'll ask some really old questions right now. I've been flying for about 5 years now but from reading all the posts here I might as well have started two months ago. My first question is where do I get some info. on no-wind kites? I'm tired of trying to fly my deltas in low winds and want something that's good in a low-wind/no-wind environment. I also would like to know where I can get my hands on these catalogues that people are talking about. Please don't say go to your local kite store and etc. etc. because the local kite store isn't local. Also I currently own a REALLY OLD trilby delta, another delta in which the "wings" are bent back a bit called the mirage (I forget who makes it), a Rev II, a Hawaian flyer power kite (also old but loads of fun), and a Firedart (similar to the Hawaian but less powerful). I'm looking to expand my collection to other "types" of kites but don't really know what's out there. Any ideas on what might be of interest? As I stated above I've been reading about these no-wind kites which sound interesting. I don't really want to get into parafoils because I don't have a ton of cash and I have no place to make good use of a parafoil. (I live in Baltimore by the way if that helps with any kite suggestions.) Also how do I get info. concerning kite shows in my area? I have never been to one and could probably learn a lot from one if I could find out where they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in adavance! Your best bet is probably to troll through the rec.kites archives (ftp://ftp.hawaii.edu/pub/rec/kites). I can't think of a better resource on the subject. >I also would >like to know where I can get my hands on these catalogues that people are >talking about. Again, have a look in the archives, in the address FAQ. Additionally, Into the Wind often puts its 800 number in the backs of magazines (non-kite...try Smithsonian or National Geographic; think I've seen it in these places) or in the yellow pages. >Please don't say go to your local kite store and etc. >etc. because the local kite store isn't local. Baltimore, eh? What's not local about Harbor Place? And a 40 minute trip down to Kites Up and Away in Annapolis is pretty local too -- and in my opinion it's a much better store. >Also I currently own a >REALLY OLD trilby delta, another delta in which the "wings" are bent back >a bit called the mirage (I forget who makes it) Um, do you mean diamonds? I know trlby tried to market a delta (the Arriba), but it didn't sell well. I can't think of a delta called the Mirage, though there's a classic high performance diamond kite by that name. >Also how do I get info. concerning kite shows in my area? Get in touch with either the Maryland Kite Society or the Kapitol Air Korps. Or just keep an idea on the events calendar on rec.kites. Drop a line if you're want more info. Jeff -- |Jeffrey C. I'm looking to expand my collection to other > "types" of kites but don't really know what's out there Hi Jeremy. While school is in session, your nearest kite store will be S&P Kites in Charlotte, NC, about a 90 minute drive from WFU. The owner is EXTREMELY knowledgeable and friendly, and carries the most comprehensive inventory I've seen in any kite store. A trip down would be a great investment of a lazy Saturday in NC. The phone is (704) 567-9006. E-mail me for directions. Regarding your kite choices, you may want to consider a more radical, lighter two-line kite. Your Hawaiian and Fire Dart are both older designs; both respond to a pretty strong control. A lighter kite which is more sensitive to control inputs will help you improve your technique, as well as being better suited to the generally soft winds you'll see at WFU. I fly a Jordan Air Pro more often than any other kite while at WFU. While not a true ULTRA light kite (it weighs in at about 8oz.), it is responsive enough to fly well on short lines (50') in an honest 3mph. Life is good.
