Subject: Flexifoil question Hmmmmm, looks like my original posting went to /dev/null, I can't imaginge nobody out there knows an answer to 2 simple questions. So I re-send it, apologies if it went out before. I have 2 6' flexifoils stacked together which I fly in light to moderate winds on a 60lb Spectra. I'm now thinking of adding a 3rd one to my stack. What sort of line/line strength would be most suitable for this. Anybody got any ideas/opinions about this? I'm also contemplating adding tails to my foils. I've seen a while ago a description but all I can remember is that it mentioned a minimum geometry for this so that the tail doesn't interfere with the foils. Again, anybody got any ideas/opinions about this? thomas kloeber -- ........................................................................... : smail: Cabletron Systems, Technology Drive, Durham, N.H. : : email: klober@ctron.com : : vmail: +1-603-337 7361 : :..........................................................................: : When intelligent machines are constructed, we should not be surprised to : : find them as confused and as stubborn as men in their convictions about : : mind-matter, consciousness, free will and the like. -- M.Minsky : :..........................................................................: = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1993 04:40:09 -1000 From: ajb@oasis.icl.co.uk (Adam Buckley) Message-Id: Organization: ICL, Bracknell, UK Subject: FLEXIFOIL question I have a Super10 Flexifoil which I fly on 90 metre lines. For a start, where are you getting your line from? I can only buy Spectra at up to 300' lengths? I have a pair of 300' lines, which I and everyone else regard as very long. Hmm... that's about the 90m that is your starting point. Thoughts about 200m Flexi lines: 1) Weight will br critical. The line drag will slow down the foil considerably. Go for the lightest line that you can possibly get away with. I wouldn't rule out 80lb. 2) CAA. The UK altitude limit is 60m. Festivals usualy have clearance for higher, but 200m lines would dominate any festival site that I have been to in the UK. 3) Control. The slack in the line will make the thing sloppy. 4) Walking. You will soon tire of walking 400m every time you want to visit the kite! 5) Stretch. This could be considerable over this distance. NB: if you arn't runing close to breaking point, the lines are too heavy :-). As 200 metres is over 600' (1/10 mile+), it sounds very extreme, to say nothing of time consuming when you have to go mess with the kite on the other end. -- Steve Cseplo |A| The Mad Hata sc5@prism.gatech.edu |K| AKA Region 4 Director |A| "Hey, mon...Tako Kichi!" = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
