Because developers can easily incorporate pictures, text, music and even video into documents, many Web pages become collages of material gathered from disparate sites. But each piece may be protected by a different copyright. The Web-site developer must acquire the rights to use each piece of material or face potentialy liability for infringement. Copyrightable material includes all recently writter work - books, magazine articles, etc. - as well as photographs, music, musical recordings, film and video. Only the copyright holder has the exclusive right to reproduce, display, perform or prepare deriabitives of the work. Even developers who have previously acquired the right to use copyrighted material for other purposes are not automatically able to use that work on the Web. Previous grants by authors may not have included distribution by electronic media. Note: this is only part of the article. If displaying Web-stuff is priviledged only to copyright owners, there's no sense anymore! Carl can run his Web-service without network connection because only he has the right to display his copyrighted material??? Or is it _he_, who displays the stuff on _my_ screen when I am browsing his home page? Is it he (his server), who "prepare derivatives of the work" if my Netscape produces hard copies on paper? BTW the general discussion on copyright & Web publishing without any specific aspect to kites, does not belong to rec.kites. There's other newsgroups for that. Simo P.S. I wonder if Mr. Nasty had a permission to reproduce Peter Brown's text in his posting? I guess you are not allowed to redistribute the article.... :-) I would like to read it though. I'm really interested if people can sue my socks off for the one graphical image I use without previously asking permission for it.... How about those web sites that offer tons of icons and stuff. If I get something there, do I have to check if THEY illigally got it somewhere else ? Maybe this is not a "kites" type of discussion anymore... Wrong again, Si. The topic has to do with individual Web Pages related to kiting. Seems to have a specific aspect to me. Do you need it spelt out more clearly than that? >P.S. I wonder if Mr. Nasty had a permission to reproduce Peter Brown's > text in his posting? Or, am I violating Peter Brown's copyright > by quoting Mr. Nasty's posting? Actually my uneducated friend. When you give credit where credit is due in relation to an article then it is not in violation of a copyright. It is when you take the credit, (like you and your kind like to do) for work which is not your own. P.S.
